Sentio Solutions Introduces Its Vision for Augmented Mental Health

In the Augmented Mental Health era, patients receive personalized care and support around the clock, families are notified when their loved ones are at risk and therapists base their diagnosis on objective data. Similar to how diabetics use a glucose monitor or how people suffering from cardiovascular disease measure their blood pressure, Augmented Mental Health technologies will become the status quo for caring for mental health.

Sentio will present its vision for Augmented Mental Health and showcase its emotion recognition technology at HLTH The Future of Healthcare conference in Las Vegas, May 6-9.

San Francisco, Calif - May 7, 2018 - Sentio Solutions, a developer of artificial emotional intelligence technology, today introduced its vision for Augmented Mental Health, a new era that aims to alleviate the burden of mental health disorders. Augmented Mental Health is about the emergence and adoption of digital technologies that are based on objective data combined with the provision of evidence-based techniques for on-time diagnosis and prevention as well as better management and treatment of mental health disorders.

Sentio also recently announced a new program for Augmented Mental Health that uses a combination of evidence-based behavioral practices and Feel, the world’s first emotion sensor & mental health advisor to help people monitor and manage their emotional wellbeing to develop better-coping skills towards greater mental health. The new program serves high-risk employees and members of insurance companies, as well as health plans. Sentio will present its vision for Augmented Mental Health and showcase its new program at HLTH The Future of Healthcare event in Las Vegas, May 6-9 at booth S26.

The Augmented Mental Health Era

Mental health care providers and insurance companies are facing a crisis as the world grapples with rapidly rising rates of mental illness. The demand for mental health care is increasing and so are the costs to provide comprehensive services. According to the World Health Organization, 450 million people globally suffer from mental health disorders (1). In the US alone, 1 out of 5 adults or roughly 43 million people struggle with mental health (2). Mental health disorders cost $467 billion annually to the US economy (3). Depression alone affects about 300 million people worldwide (4), while it is estimated that by 2030, it will be the leading cause of disease burden globally (5).

At the same time, mental health innovation is long overdue. While modern medicine relies almost solely on objective measurement, mental health has remained in the domain of subjective reporting. Its clinical environment hasn’t evolved with the intelligence, care, and diagnostics shown to the rest of medicine. To diagnose and track mental disorders we still rely on such things as patient questionnaires. In other medical and life sciences fields, practitioners and patients utilize a variety of tools and technologies. For example, cardiologists use blood pressure monitors to objectively evaluate and monitor the situation of a patient. Another case is that of diabetes, where those with the condition regulate their intake of insulin and diet based on measurements taken from mobile glucose monitors.

But, can we successfully monitor our mental health? Why hasn’t it been done before? Is it even possible? Are there objective indicators to measure mental and emotional health? The answer is YES. Those indicators are our emotions.

“Augmented Mental Health is the new paradigm in mental health care”, said George Eleftheriou, CEO and Co-founder of Sentio. “Accurate and reliable data derived from a variety of sensors is going to be a game-changer in assessing a person’s emotional state in real-time and enabling therapists and insurance providers to provide on-time, personalized care.”

In the Augmented Mental Health era, patients will receive continuous support, families will be notified when their loved ones are at risk and caregivers will base their diagnosis on objective data. Augmented Mental Health technologies will become the status quo for caring for mental health.

Sentio’s Augmented Mental Health Program Sentio’s new Augmented Mental Health Program uses a combination of evidence-based behavioral techniques (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Mindfulness, Positive psychology) and Feel, the company’s emotion recognition technology that provides 24x7 continuous monitoring and real-time coaching.

Feel consists of 3 parts: the Wristband, Proprietary Algorithms, and the Mobile Application. The wristband has integrated bio-sensors that monitor a variety of physiological signals throughout the day, while in the background, proprietary algorithms analyze these signals to recognize the wearer’s emotions. The mobile application receives the data from the wristband and monitors the emotions of the user, providing personalized recommendations as well as real-time coaching and intervention based on the principles of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.

Sentio’s program for Augmented Mental Health includes all of the following:

  1. Continuous Emotion Tracking: Feel provides continuous, unobtrusive monitoring of the wearer’s emotional states and provides those data to the CBT expert in order to enable a data-driven therapy.
  2. Real-time Support & Personalized Advice: Feel mobile application utilizes data from the wristband to provide real-time support and intervention. It contains multiple features for optimizing and improving mental health. These include an emotion-tracking calendar, a mood diary, and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) tools which are tailored to and shared with the wearer based on their tracked emotional states.
  3. CBT Expert Therapist: Virtual short sessions with a CBT therapist augmented by the data provided by Feel’s emotion sensor.
  4. Online Lessons: A series of online lessons about the program and its main features that outlines the essence and highlights the importance of the applied evidence based techniques. Tutorials on the correct application of the tools and the exercises within the program.

With the Augmented Mental Health program Sentio aims to help Payers and Healthcare Providers:

Sentio has also conducted studies with the Department of Psychology at UC Riverside and recently, submitted a grant with the Psychiatry department of Harvard Medical School to develop and test the technology enabling Augmented Mental Health.
